Simple Seismometer for Classroom Use
A simple seismometer for classroom use can be constructed and installed for modest cost. The system requirements include: Cost for the mechanical horizontal pendulum seismometer is about $10, 0$ if you're a good scrounger. Students can build this instrument with some adult supervision. A design for a fully electronic seismometer is in the works. Cost for the amplifier is about $30. A list of parts, most of which are available from DigiKey, is attached. Students can assemble the amplifier component with adult supervision. The DAS 800Analog/Digital converter lists for $349. Purchase from Keithley Metrabyte. Don't forget to ask for the educational institution discount which should reduce the price to below $300. This device can also be used to record any data (air pressure, temperature, etc.) for which a transducer that produces an electrical voltage output can be created. The computer is any 386 or better PC. Use an old one at your school or check with computer stores or parents for a donation. Cost ??? Seismo A/D Recorder Software is available from C.
