ESCI 575: EARTH MATERIALS IN HUMAN AND ANIMAL HEALTH
A one credit hour - Two Saturdays

An exciting, innovative course on the cutting edge of medical geology is being taught again Fall 2008!!!! EARTH MATERIALS AND HEALTH will examine the beneficial contributions of the Earth to human and animal health. In this one-credit hour course we examine common Earth materials and their medicinal and palliative uses. An interactive approach familiarizes the student with rocks and minerals, their occurrences, and their applications in medicine. This is a multidisciplinary topic which touches upon geology, medicine, anthropology, microbiology, and more.

This weekend course is designed for students and teachers, as well as anybody interested in health and beneficial Earth materials. This is also a continued education credit course.
Course Number and Prefix: ESCI 575 (Earth Systems Science Education—offered via UNC Extended Studies Office)
Credits: This is a one-hour graduate credit or 15-hour contact hours course.

Prerequisites:
An introductory geology experience and/or strong interest.
Introduction:
This course seeks to engage the student with Earth materials on a personal basis by discussing the general occurrences and properties of Earth materials and how they are used in medical settings, including remedies used in the home and everyday life. Students will be schooled to examine the materials with a geologic and medicinal approach and will become knowledgeable about preparing and applying common Earth materials.
Course Requirements:
This is a short course with the duration over a weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Students will be required to take a quiz at the end of the course and participate in a field excursion.
Registration and fee:
UNC graduate students may register the regular way through the UNC registrar’s office. Juniors and seniors with a 3.0 GPA may take this course with prior approval from their advisor by calling Extended Studies at 351-2944. Out of town participants and non-UNC students may register by calling the UNC Extended Studies office at 1-800-232-1749.
This course will cost $219. This includes materials for class, samples, a booklet and transportation for the field excursion. Extended Studies courses are charged above and beyond regular tuition fees.
